Yet another sign that America's public education system is a dumpster fire...
Toxic bilge that poisons everything.
Sigh… It never ends. Even when you try to get away from it, cultural degradation - its scope and reach - sullies the Righteous Road. To wit: I recently discovered a website - Goodreads - where thoughtful readers - not to mention people for whom thought is unattainable - rate books—a good thing… Healthy.
But of course, there’s always, always: THAT GUY… THAT GIRL… People who show-up and, like a zit on The Mona Lisa, dim light.
This is the case at Goodreads, where 1 and 2 star reviews should be enshrined, up front, in the Electroshock Hall of Fame. Because I’m not talking bad prose, not alluding to pablum, but to fictional masterpieces… Gone With the Wind… To Kill a Mockingbird… Pride and Prejudice… You name a classic, it has 1-star reviews (often thousands) from wrecks “learned” on the public dime, which is to say wrecks devoid of learning, writ large.
And, yes, they’re wrecks—people offended by historical fiction because it describes the REALITY of the era... People who 1-star Hemingway because his characters are “misogynistic.” I read one review decrying “racism” toward Indians despite the novel - set in the 1830s! - being about the settling of the American West. Apparently, to not “offend” these kooks, authors must apply 21st century norms to the 19th century, a standard which, if applied, would mean NO CLASSICS, whatsoever.
Indeed, these people, offended by Nazis, would bowdlerize Germans from The Sound of Music… And Moby Dick? … Whaling - and the book - should be banned. The Grapes of Wrath—sexist… Huckleberry Finn—racist.
They never stop. For these are the devouring voles of the web. These are the louts - again, the product of public schools - who see racism in Easter lilies and bigotry in truck tires… Nurse Ratched, the colossal harpy of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, epitomizes - I quote - “hatred of strong women.” Or to put it another way: any woman not glowingly depicted means that the author despises ALL women… Ditto: blacks, Indians, whales.
Nothing escapes their inglorious eye. Nothing is spared mental turbidity. So yeah, these people aren’t merely stupid, they’re debased and bonkers.
But they’re also common, a poisonous mental cloud… One that looms over and invades everything, and which, I sadly note, is becoming more prevalent: the 1-star cult of a 50-star nation.
Critical Thought, let’s hope it comes back. 🤦🏻

It would be a pity that they wouldn't read Grapes of Wrath because they thought it was sexist. The book was written by Steinbach, a Progressive of his time, and also talked about the plight of tenant farmers.
